French police breaking Microsoft Jail - Firefox, Linux and OpenOffice

The French paramilitary police is to break Microsoft Jail. Two years after switching its browsers to Firefox and three years after dumping MS Office for OpenOffice, Now they are planing to dump Windows Operating system and switch 70,000 desktops to Linux OS.
5,000 to 8,000 machines are to make the switch this year and the rest will take next four years, a gradual change.

Reasons for the switch: diversifying suppliers, reducing costs and gaining control of the software.

They claimed that "Switch to open source products was saving the department around €7m a year".
